The goal of accreditation is to ensure that institutions of higher education meet acceptable levels of quality. Accreditation in the United States involves non-governmental entities (accrediting organizations) as well as federal and state government agencies (these three entities are formally known as the Triad).

An accredited programme receives an accreditation level (Level I, II, III or IV). The higher the accreditation level, the more benefits there are. For example, from accreditation level 1 (Level I) onwards, educational institutions no longer need to apply for an SO number from the CHED for that study programme.
An unaccredited course will be developed by a company or individual without approval against regulated standards. The course may be no different in quality to the accredited course but has no approval process.
