The problems with trusting spell check Spell check will not detect the improper use of homonyms, such as their and there. Spell check may flag words as errors which are indeed correct. Spell check does not always offer useful spelling suggestions for severely misspelled words.

Dont rely entirely on spelling checkers. These can be useful tools but they are far from foolproof. Spell checkers have a limited dictionary, so some words that show up as misspelled may really just not be in their memory.
But the biggest weakness of spell-checker is that its ignorance of homophones words that are pronounced the same even though theyre spelled differently, which humans screw up a lot. Computer spell-checkers are notoriously ill-equipped to catch these errors.
One of the most notable drawbacks of this kind of software is that it is only programmed to match the words in your paper to the ones in its repository. In other words, a standard grammar checker does not verify whether the words have been used in the right place, in the right context, or in the right order.
The truth is, relying solely on spell-check often leads to embarrassing mistakes. These technologies only look at individual words in your composition, not how each word is used in the context of the sentence. This means that it will only catch spelling errors, not grammatical errors.
Following up with that trend, a 2005 study found we have become ever-reliant on this technology, with spellers making more mistakes with spell-check turned on, than off. Conclusion: Computer spell-check, an invention of the 1970s has been making us worse at spelling for at least 25 years.
