Here are 8 ways I help my kids remember the spelling of words: We study spelling patterns. We study sight words. We have a Word Study Notebook. We use a portable word bank {or word wall}. We use an editing checklist. I observe their spellings. We review words. I give a Spelling Inventory.
Spelling Inventories They contain lists of words that were chosen to represent a variety of spelling features at increasing levels of difficulty. These features might include consonants, digraphs, blends, short vowels, and so forth. They relate directly to the stages of spelling development.
Scoring: Check off or highlight the features for each word which are spelled ing to the descriptors at the top. Assign 1 point for each feature (some words are scored for some features and not others). Add an additional point in the Word Correct column for entire words that are spelled correctly.
Directions: Call out each word and give a sentence for meaning. Have the child say each word and then spell it on paper in a numbered column. Stop the test when the child is missing more than half of the words in the list. The highest level with 50% spelled correctly is the childs approximate Grade Level for spelling.
Types of Spelling Tests Oral tests. Students are given the word by the teacher to spell out loud. Aural tests. Students listen to the teacher read a word, and then write it down. Proofreading tests. Students are given a written text to read, with mistakes in spelling. Multiple-choice tests.
A method of spelling assessment includes identifying misspelled words; describing error patterns; analyzing, for a given spelling error, whether the target word is a base word or is derived or inflected; and assessing the students phonological awareness, visual orthographic memory, orthographic knowledge, and
Five common spelling assessment tools are CTOPP-2, LAC-3, SPELL-2, TWS-5 , and WADE. The five building blocks of spelling are: mental orthographic images - sight words. morphology - the study of affixes, prefixes, and suffixes as they relate to word forms.
Spelling inventories consist of lists of words specially chosen to represent a variety of spelling features or patterns at increasing levels of difficulty. The words in spelling in- ventories are designed to assess students knowledge of key spelling features that re- late to the different spelling stages.
