Maintaining the radio log The radio log must contain a summary of communications relating to distress, urgency and safety messages. The summary must include dates and times in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), details of the vessels involved and their positions.
Official Log Book The logbook is considered to be a running log of all official events such as Arrival / Departure of the vessel to/from the port, Draughts, Freeboards, Onboard Emergency Drills, Crew onboard, Fuel/Fresh Water ROB, Masters Handing Over/Taking Over, etc.
The main purpose of GMDSS is to prevent unanswered distress calls and delay in Search and Rescue actions when distress situations occur.
NCS. NCS Network Co-ordination Station. This is the land earth station within the Inmarsat Oceanan Region which is responsible for a smooth communication proces. This station is directing the mobile users and the Land Earth Stations to the right appointed channel.
The radio log should contain a record of important incidents connected with the radio service, for example: a. a breakdown or serious malfunction of the equipment; b. a breakdown of communications with coast stations, land earth stations or satellites; c.
The following information must be written in a new logbook: Ships name. International Maritime Organization (IMO) number. Call Sign. Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) Number. Port of Registry. Engine room team including all engineer officers and ratings.
Radio watchkeeping is automatic with GMDSS. When receiving equipment is activated an operator is alerted. After this, further distress and safety communications are carried out on radio telephone or radio telegraphy (Narrow Band Direct Printing).
The GMDSS operates over 4 sea areas of coverage from shore to ship. The 4 sea areas are classified as: A1, A2, A3 and A4. Sea area A1: Covered by VHF radio enabling Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and Radio Telephone (RT).
This Log Book is intended to encourage greater awareness of safety equipment through inspection and the recording of such inspections. Safety equipment has reduced in cost and improved in availability over the last 10 years.
