Overview. Scale breaks are intentional breaks on the y-axis that are most often used to redistribute data points on a chart. This feature improves readability when there are large differences between the high and low values of the data being plotted (Figure 1).
To be able to set breaks, click on lines in the action bar above the chart and select breaks. Now click on + to add a break. To set a break, you must define an area that is shortened by the break. However, this range must be within the values of the highest column.
Click the chart to which you want to add a text box. In the chart, click where you want to start a corner of the text box, and then drag until the text box is the size that you want. In the text box, type the text that you want. The text will wrap in the text box.
Simply place your cursor in the formula bar where you want to add the break and press the ALT+ENTER keys. Hit ENTER again, and youll see the text wrap on two lines. You now have the text arranged the way you like it in the spreadsheet and in the graph.
Add an axis break to the chart Right click on a series at the position to add a break and select Add break Left click the axis break to change formatting or style. Drag on the axis break to change the scale.
We will right click on the Primary Vertical axis in the chart and select the Format Axis to open the Format Axis dialog box. Next, we will click Number in the left bar and type [=500]0;;; in the Format Code box and click on the Add button to close the dialog box.
