If you were to print a copy of your document, ask a friend to proofread it, they'd probably mark errors in red pen and write suggestions in the margins. You can do this electronically using Word's Track Changes and Comments features. Turn on Track Changes by going to the Review tab and clicking the command. Changes you make will be shown as markup, with deleted text crossed out and added text underlined. Comments can be added by selecting text and clicking New Comment. This helps the owner see changes before finalizing the document.
