LaTeX distinguishes between left (`) and right () quotation marks; the former corresponds to the grave generally found to the left of the numbers at top of the keyboard, and the latter corresponds to the usual single quote mark. These symbols, by themselves, produce left and right single quotes.
Single quotation marks are produced in LaTeX using ` and . Double quotation marks are produced by typing `` and . (The `undirected double quote character produces double right quotation marks: it should never be used where left quotation marks are required.)
This is achieved easily enough in LaTeX---I simply insert the quote environment into the paragraph without leaving any blank lines between the quote and the surrounding lines, like this: This is the first sentence of paragraph ONE. \begin{quote} This is a block quote.
Quotes. LaTeX treats left and right quotes as different entities. For single quotes, ` (on British keyboards, this symbol is found on the key adjacent to the number 1) gives a left quote mark, and is the right. For double quotes, simply double the symbols, and LaTeX will interpret them ingly.
The normal TeXworks workflow is PDF-centric, using pdfTeX and XeTeX as typesetting engines and generating PDF documents as the default formatted output.
American style uses double quotes () for initial quotations, then single quotes () for quotations within the initial quotation. British style uses single quotes () for initial quotations, then double quotes () for quotations within the initial quotation.
Now at the top of TeXworks you will see a green button. This is the Compile button. Next to that you will see something like pdfLaTeX+MakeIndex+BibTeX. Click on the downward triangle next to that and choose pdfLaTeX. Then click on the green Compile button. You will be asked to save the file and give it a name.
Time for action writing our first document with TeXworks Launch the TeXworks editor by clicking on the desktop icon or open it in the Start menu. Click on the New button.
