the pap smear base cervical screening program was first introduced in 1991 and it has provided good benefits for women reducing cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates by over 50% but its now time to make a good program even better the most important change is the introduction of a new cervical screening test this is based on checking for the presence of the human papilloma virus or the virus that actually causes cervical cancer so by doing this were looking one step earlier for any changes compared to looking for abnormal changes in the cells which is what the pap smear does this is really great news for women because the new program is not only safer but it will protect against a further 20% of invasive cervical cancers the other piece of good news for women is that instead of screening 26 times in a lifetime well only need to screen up to 10 times in a lifetime and still have a safer and more effective cervical screening test for women under the age of 25 you just need to

Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. Atypical glandular cells (AGC): Some glandular cells were found that do not look normal.
There are five main categories of abnormal Pap smear results within the Bethesda system: Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). Squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL). Atypical squamous cells that may or may not be HSIL (ASC-H). Atypical glandular cells (AGC). Cancer.
Class 5 is cancer that has started to grow deeper into the cervix. This stage of cancer can spread to other parts of the body. The new classification system replaces the traditional classes with terms describing the microscopic changes in cervical cells.
An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix. This usually does not mean that you have cervical cancer. Abnormal changes on your cervix are likely caused by HPV. The changes may be minor (low-grade) or serious (high-grade). Most of the time, minor changes go back to normal on their own.
Cervical cell classes: (A) normal squamous, (B) normal columnar, and (C) low-grade dysplasia; (D) high-grade dysplasia (HGD) with moderate dysplasia, (E) HGD with severe dysplasia, and (F) carcinoma in situ.
An abnormal cervical screening test result means that you have changes in the cells covering the neck of your womb (cervix). Abnormal cervical cells are not the same as cervical cancer. If left untreated, there is a risk that some abnormal cells could go on to develop into cervical cancer in the future.
LSIL and HSIL are two types of abnormal changes to cervical squamous cells. Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance (ASC-US) is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. Atypical glandular cells (AGC): Some glandular cells were found that do not look normal.
