Time Limit Policies The STAAR English I and English II assessments have a five-hour time limit. All other STAAR assessments have a four-hour time limit. Students must complete the test within the same school day.
The star redesign assessments are designed so that students can complete the third through fifth grade assessments in two hours and the sixth through eighth grade assessments in three hours If needed , students can take up to four hours to complete their assessment .
Beginning with the 20222023 school year, RLA assessments will assess both reading and writing (grades 38 English, grades 35 Spanish, and English I and II End-of-Course) and will include new question types and an extended constructed response, or essay, at every grade level.
For students testing STAAR on paper, the extended-constructed response item character count limit of 2,300 characters equates to approximately 46 lines. Short-constructed response text boxes allow for 475 characters, which is approximately 10 lines on paper.
Depending on the individual question, the non-multiple choice item types can be worth multiple points. Most non-multiple choice items are worth a maximum of two points, Reading Language Arts (RLA) extended constructed response items are the exception and are worth a maximum of ten points.
The STAAR redesign includes several components: Online Testing and Accommodations. New Question Types. Cross-curricular Passages. Evidence-based Writing.
As a reminder, beginning this school year, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has removed the maximum time allowed for STAAR test administrations. Districts will no longer have to stop students from testing after a four- or five-hour testing period.
Beginning with the 20222023 school year, STAAR assessments are administered primarily online. Released test questions for STAAR online assessments are available on the Practice Test Site.
