There are different physical keyboard layouts and different keyboard input language options. They must match if you want the key symbols to match. Im going to guess that you have an international keyboard with the symbol on the 2 key. The US keyboard has the @ symbol on the 2 key.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
Press the Ctrl+H shortcut key to open the Find and Replace dialog box. Enter in both the Find what and Replace with boxes. Select Replace All to convert all quotation marks in the document to your preferred style.
Changes to a quotation requiring explanation Either type three periods with spaces around each ( . . . ) or use the ellipsis character created by your word processing program when you type three periods in a row ( ), with a space before and after. Use four periodsthat is, a period plus an ellipsis (. )
By default, Microsoft Word automatically formats quotation marks so that the marks curl inward on the quoted section of text. In most cases, this formatting wont cause any problems, but when exporting text in some cases, the smart quote marks may not display correctly.
On the File tab, select Options. Select Proofing, then select AutoCorrect Options. In the AutoCorrect dialog box, do the following: Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and under Replace as you type, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box.
This probably happens because Word uses language settings for a language that uses chevrons (double angle quotation marks) as quotation marks, such as French. By default, Word auto-corrects Ascii quotation marks () to language-specific marks, e.g. to smart curly quotes for English.
Because most computer keyboards lack keys to enter typographic quotation marks directly, much that is written using word-processing programs has vertical quotation marks. The smart quotes feature in some computer software can convert vertical quotation marks to curly ones, although sometimes imperfectly.
