Its incredibly important to maintain a positive and professional tone throughout your letter. Remember, youre writing as if youre the signer, so do your best to convey their personality and their feelings about you and your performance. In addition to this, always be honest.
Offer specific examples of the students achievements, skills, and qualities that make them a strong candidate. Mention academic performance, leadership roles, extracurricular activities, projects, or any other relevant accomplishments.
Keep it concise. Summarize in one sentence how you know the student, identify their strengths, and provide 1-2 examples or stories. Use concrete examples, not generalizations. Tell stories that illustrate the students character.
If the typos must be corrected, then I would ask the professor to re-write the letter. Its your professors letter, not your letter, so of course they want to phrase things the way they see as best.
If you still work regularly with a previous letter writer, its a good idea to request an update. For example, say youve continued to work hard in a lab for the past 2 years and have recently added two new publications and a presentation.
If you need to make changes to a submitted recommendation, you can do so only if the applicant has not submitted their final application to their school. If the applicant has submitted their final application, the school has already received the recommendation and changes cannot be made.
