Tags provide you with a way of identifying specific versions of an image. Tags make it easy to deploy a specific version, and then if something goes wrong, you can easily roll back to the previous version. One of the useful features of tags is that an image can have more than one tag.
Tag an Image Using docker tag Command So far, we have discussed tagging an image using the docker build command. But we can also explicitly tag an image using the docker tag command. Tagging an image just creates an alias to an image name or an imageId.
Docker tags are just an alias for an image ID. The tags name must be an ASCII character string and may include lowercase and uppercase letters, digits, underscores, periods, and dashes. In addition, the tag names must not begin with a period or a dash, and they can only contain 128 characters.
1 Answer For this you could use: docker tag server:latest myname/server:latest. docker tag d583c3ac45fd myname/server:latest. So you can have as many of them associated with the same image as you like. You can remove the old name after youve re-tagged it: docker rmi server.
To specify a value for repository and tag of the image, we use the --tag or -t flag with the $ docker build command.
To update to a newer image, you first need to pull the new version. Run the docker pull command followed by a colon and the name and the tag of the newer image: the name and tag that you took note of previously. The name and tag for the example is python:slim-buster .
You can build an image with several tags and then push the image with the --all-tags option. Older Docker clients that do not support --all-tags will push all tags by default (simply omit the option), newer clients will only push latest by default. As an alternative, you may want to push each tag separately.
Adding Tags Tags are added to images using the docker tag command. Tags can also be attached when youre building an image with docker build by passing the -t flag. Both tags will now refer to the same image so you can start to use them interchangeably.
In simple words, Docker tags convey useful information about a specific image version/variant. They are aliases to the ID of your image which often look like this: f1477ec11d12 . Its just a way of referring to your image. A good analogy is how Git tags refer to a particular commit in your history.
