but welcome to another MedCram lecture today we're gonna talk about something a little different in terms of treatment we could actually talk about DNR full code palliative care just a quick primer on those sorts of things especially in terms of what we do in the intensive care unit but also what we do on the floor so I think this is kind of a confusing topic for some people who are not used to it DNR stands for do not resuscitate and of course the do and the not are pretty clear but the resuscitate can sometimes be a little confusing so when someone says somebody is DNR that means they don't want to be resuscitated but what does that exactly mean and I have they fully given consent about what it is that they want to have done well the opposite of DNR is a term that we sometimes call full code and that comes from the fact that when somebody in their heart stops or they stop breathing they have something called a code blue and it's during that code blue that you can do all sorts of thi...

DNR means that no CPR (chest compressions, cardiac drugs, or placement of a breathing tube) will be performed. A DNI or Do Not Intubate order means that chest compressions and cardiac drugs may be used, but no breathing tube will be placed.
Hospitals sometimes use the expression no code, which refers to the jargon term code, short for Code Blue, an alert to a hospitals resuscitation team. If a patient does want to be resuscitated, their code status may be listed as full code (the opposite of DNR).
The main point is this: as a bystander, i.e. a non-medical professional, you cannot get into any legal trouble for giving CPR to a person with a DNR, and should always give CPR as soon as possible to all victims of sudden cardiac arrest.
Many opt for DNRs because they fear a complication will leave them unconscious or unable to control their own care. They dread being hooked up indefinitely to machines and tubes.
A do-not-resuscitate order, or DNR order, is a medical order written by a doctor. It instructs health care providers not to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if a patients breathing stops or if the patients heart stops beating.
A DNR order allows you to choose whether or not you want CPR in an emergency. It is specific about CPR. It does not have instructions for other treatments, such as pain medicine, other medicines, or nutrition.
No code: An order signed by a persons doctor stating that CPR should not be attempted. (Also called a do-not-resuscitate [DNR] order.)
