Change from J-1 Status to F-1 Status Meet with an immigration advisor from the ISSC to discuss your plan to change your status from J-1 to F-1 status. Request an I-20 from the ISSC through the Change of Status eForm sent to you after your meeting with an ISSC immigration advisor.
To adjust your status, you must file an I-485 form with the USCIS and wait an average processing time of six months. This step cannot be expedited with premium processing and is only available to those who are currently in the U.S. under a nonimmigrant visa like a J-1.

In terms of processing times, USCIS and DOS are coordinating closely to make sure that the timing of the approval of a provisional unlawful presence waiver application is close to the time of the scheduled immigrant visa interview abroad. Generally, it takes 4 to 6 months to process an I-601A waiver application.
