How to reduce your BMI Reduce your daily calorie intake. Taking control of your calorie intake is a solid first step to losing weight and reducing your BMI. Avoid crash diets. While crash diets might tempt you with rapid results, they arent a long-term solution and can be harmful to your health. Move more. Eat more fibre.
Dr Neeta Deshpande, diabetologist and obesity physician, said that ing to the guidelines followed in India, a person is considered overweight when their BMI is between 23 and 25 kg/m2, while a person with a BMI over 27.5 kg/m2 is considered obese.
Under the new guidelines, people with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight. For example, at 5 feet 3 inches, adults who weighed 141 pounds or more would be overweight, while those who are 5 feet 11 inches would be considered obese at 215 pounds.
The BMI chart hasnt been updated since 2000, when it was based on population data from 1963 to 1980. Under the previous charts, it was difficult to categorize the severity of obesity, Dr. Paula Newton, a pediatrician at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, told healthline.com.
For adults ages 20 and older, a BMI of 30 and above is considered obese. The previous charts for children did not go beyond a BMI of 37. The new charts extend to a BMI of 60 and measure whether it falls within healthy parameters based on a percentile measured against other children of the same age and gender.
The formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. If height has been measured in centimeters, divide by 100 to convert this to meters. When using English measurements, pounds should be divided by inches squared. This should then be multiplied by 703 to convert from lbs/inches2 to kg/m2.
