Erin: Theres been a wonderful real-time change in the way were able to adapt to student needs. Marguerite: What formative assessment am I using daily, so that I can measure whether or not in that class period, kids are learning the material? A good Exit Ticket can tell whether or not a kid has a superficial understanding of the information, or has some depth of understanding. And then the next day the teacher can differentiate their lesson based on student needs. An Exit Ticket is a formative assessment linked to the objective of the lessons. Shannon: Typically theyre short, just a few questions and theyre focused on one particular skill. And we design them ourselves. Exit tickets are not intended to be summative in nature. Nor are they a high-stakes test or assessment. Rather, they are a short informal assessments, surveys, or tasks, usually 2 5 questions in length that students complete before they leave the classroom. They usually take no longer than a few minutes.
An exit ticket, also known as an exit slip, is a short informal assessment activity, typically given to students at the end of the lesson.
Verbal Exit Ticket As students stand in line to turn in their work, they tell you one thing that they learned from the lesson. Alternatively, you could ask them a specific question or have them ask you one question about the lesson.
Finally, exit tickets can be easily differentiated so that all students are engaged in the activity. For example, you can pose a content-based question, but offer a sentence stem for struggling students to guide them in formulating their response.
The best closures include a summary of the objectives for that lesson, make connections between prior and future lessons, and provide direction for future lessons. Lesson closings also serve to prevent discipline problems.
Closure is the step where you wrap up a lesson plan and help students organize the information in a meaningful context in their minds. This helps students better understand what they have learned and provides a way in which they can apply it to the world around them.
Exit tickets can use a variety of question types, for example, some questions might involve a rating scale, another might be more open-ended asking students to write their specific concerns or ideas or reflection. Another might ask a student to respond to a specific questions or prompt.
Using exit tickets and other closure activities allow students to reflect on their learning and share with teachers if the target has been met for the day. Exit Tickets can be simple. It can be as easy as asking the following questions: What did I learn today?
