o You may shower 48 hours after your surgery and get your incisions wet. Let the water run down over the incisions but do not rub or scrub them. o Do not soak or submerge the surgical site for at least 3 weeks following surgery. o Rest and elevate your leg for the first 24 hours.
Phase II: 2-6 weeks after surgery Phase two is also where you will begin to work on strengthening your knee. Your physical therapist should begin introducing you to exercises such as the stationary bike, stair climber, and elliptical machine.
Recovering from anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee surgery can take up to a year. After knee surgery, the wound will be closed with stitches or surgical clips. If the stitches are dissolvable, they should disappear after about 3 weeks.
After 48 hours, surgical wounds can get wet without increasing the risk of infection. After this time, you can get your stitches wet briefly with a light spray (such as in the shower), but they should not be soaked (for example, in the bath). Make sure you pat the area dry afterwards.
It's important to start walking within a day or two after ACL surgery, but only a little. Walking for a minute or two can help reduce swelling, but you shouldn't walk any more than that. After two weeks, you can start walking around unassisted without crutches for short periods of time.
Walking unassisted and the timeline for recovery Patients walk unassisted within 2-4 weeks, but for short periods. After 10-12 weeks, expect brisk walking, light jogging, and even plyometric exercise. Full recovery on ACL reconstruction is 6-12 months, or more with physical therapy.

After surgery, wounds are typically covered with gauze, cotton padding and an ACE bandage. This should be left in place for 2 days. After this, dressings may be removed and waterproof Band-Aids should be placed over the incision sites. Leave any steri-strips (adhesive paper strips over the incision) in place.
You may shower once the initial dressing is removed with the waterproof Band-Aids in place. Do not submerge the wounds in water (bathtub, pool, lake) for at least 2 weeks after surgery.
