In the General Preferences tab, click on Import Settings, located towards the bottom. Click on the menu next to Import Using WAV Encoder. Then click to change Setting Custom and a new window will open. In the WAV Encoder window, change the Sample Rate to 44.100 kHz and Sample Size to 16-bit.
In the Music app on your Mac, choose Music Settings, then click Playback. Make sure Sound Enhancer is selected. To increase or decrease the effect of the Sound Enhancer, drag the slider.
Set the project sample rate Choose File Project Settings Audio (or use the Open Audio Project Settings key command), then choose a sample rate from the Sample Rate pop-up menu. Click the Sample Rate display in the LCD, then choose a sample rate from the pop-up menu.
In MacOS Mojave, when you select a music file in Finder and click Get Info and then look at More Info, it will give you various details about the music file, including the sample rate, but not the bit rate.
Changing the sample rate and bit depth of your audio material has some consequences you should try to avoid. In fact, once youve chosen a sample rate and bit depth its best not to change it all! Its best to maintain your high quality file type although through production until the end of the mastering process.
The higher the sample rate, the more audio processing power is required when working on the project. CDs and many music streaming services use the rate of 44.1 kHz, while video formats commonly use 48 kHz. Some audio files in your project may not match the newly selected sample rate.
Make sure to connect your device to the headphone jack. In the sidebar of Audio MIDI Setup, select External Headphones, then choose a sample rate from the Format pop-up menu. For best results, match the sample rate for the headphone jack with the sample rate of your source material.
Is a higher audio sample rate better? In theory, its not a bad idea to work at a higher audio sample rate, like 176.4 kHz or 192 kHz. The files will be larger, but it can be nice to maximize the sound quality until the final bounce. In the end, however, the audio will likely be converted to either 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz.
The more samples you take - known as the sample rate - the more closely the final digital file will resemble the original. A higher sample rate tends to deliver a better-quality audio reproduction. Sample rates are usually measured per second, using kilohertz (kHz) or cycles per second.
Heres the bottom line. I recommend that you record with a sample rate of 48kHz. I recommend that you then bounce down to 44.1kHz for the final release. Recording at 48kHz enables you to record everything within the range of human hearing while leaving ample room for the anti-aliasing filter.
