Never write This proves or This quote shows to comment on your citation. Instead, follow this by paraphrasing or even re-quoting key terms from the citation.
Square brackets: [ ], if the paraphrase occurs within a passage identified as a quotation. You may make assurance doubly sure with your initials, thus: To be, or [an alternative - ag], that is the question. I like it!
Essentially, a paraphrase just rewrites the original text in its own way. A paraphrase always uses unique wording, something you come up with thats different from the original source. Because theyre unique, paraphrases do not require quotation marks as direct quotes do.
Paraphrases and summaries do not use quotation marks. However, if you use some words from the original text along with your own words, you need to use quotation marks.
If using a mixture of a paraphrase and a direct quote, be sure to a) use direct quotes around the part of the sentence that is quoted and b) add a citation at the end of the mixed quote-paraphrase.
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
Within quotations, use square brackets [ ] (not parentheses) to add your own clarification, comment, or correction. Use [sic] (meaning so or thus) to indicate that a mistake is in the source youre quoting and is not your own.
How to quote in an essay? Use a full sentence followed by a colon to introduce a quotation. Begin a sentence with your own words, then complete it with quoted words. Use an introductory phrase naming the source, followed by a comma to quote a critic or researcher.
It is useful to paraphrase when your reader needs to understand or be exposed to the argument of another author in order to understand your argument. Paraphrasing ALWAYS requires a citation. Even if you are using your own words, the idea still belongs to someone else.
When making reference to the spoken words of someone other than the author recorded in a text, cite the name of the person and the name of the author, date and page reference of the work in which the quote or reference appears.
