Artificial intelligence is enhancing radiology and medical imaging by improving efficiency and triage capabilities. Initially, there was confusion about AI's potential to replace human roles or become a general decision-making tool. Currently, AI products focus on rapid identification and early detection of medical issues, capable of analyzing vast amounts of data more quickly than humans. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved approximately 420 AI algorithms for medical imaging, primarily for cancer detection. At Mass General Brigham, doctors utilize around 50 of these algorithms, with roughly half having FDA approval, to assist in patient care.
