The FDA is considering changes to its blood donation policy, which has historically restricted men who have sex with men from donating blood. This ban originated in 1985 during the HIV/AIDS crisis and was modified in 2015 to allow donations after a one-year abstinence period. In 2020, the abstinence period was shortened to 90 days due to blood shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Current research focuses on assessing eligibility based on individual HIV risk rather than sexual identity, with studies expected to conclude by the end of 2022. LGBTQ advocates argue that the existing policy fosters stigma and shame while emphasizing that broader eligibility could help alleviate national blood shortages.

How often can I donate blood? You must wait at least eight weeks (56 days) between donations of whole blood and 16 weeks (112 days) between Power Red donations. Whole blood donors can donate up to 6 times a year. Platelet apheresis donors may give every 7 days up to 24 times per year.
Tattoos and piercings - Your temporary deferral period after receiving a tattoo or piercing is now three months. Donors previously had to wait six months before they could become eligible to donate. Microepilation If you use a personal device for microepilation, you are eligible to donate.
A common question we hear from potential blood donors is Can I donate blood if I have a tattoo? The short answer is yes! People with tattoos can donate blood.
You may not be able to donate if your ink is less than 3 months old. Giving blood after recently getting a tattoo can be dangerous. Though uncommon, an unclean tattoo needle can carry a number of bloodborne viruses, such as: hepatitis B.
Erectile dysfunction drugs, hormonal preparations and contraceptives. Erectile dysfunction or the medication for it do not prevent blood donation. Contraceptives such as contraceptive pills, intra-uterine devices and hormone preparations to treat menopausal symptoms are not obstacles to blood donation.
* The average adult has 10 pints of blood in their bodies, and whole blood donations are currently capped at one pint per personand thats only if the donor meets a certain height and weight requirement.
A recent tattoo or piercing may affect your eligibility to donate for a period of 4 months. You may be eligible to donate if your tattoo(s) and/or piercing(s) are older. This waiting period is usually in place to ensure that the tattoo or piercing has healed completely and there is no risk of infection.
A tattoo is acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile needles and ink that is not reused. Cosmetic tattoos (including microblading of eyebrows only) applied in a licensed establishment in a regulated state using sterile needles and ink that is not reused is acceptable.
