It could take a few months or up to 3 years to get a book deal. The exact timelines depend on the time taken to get an agent and a publisher. Also, after clinching a book deal, you might have to wait for over 12 months for the book to launch, depending on the work needed to get it publish-ready.
A book deal works by a writer querying an agent for representation, that agent pitching the project to traditional publishers, and publishers buying the rights to that book from the author.
By law, the parties to a contract can always modify or terminate their agreement by mutual consent, even if the contract doesn't say so. If the contract doesn't grant you the right to terminate, you can still ask the publisher to terminate the contract and revert your rights voluntarily.
In a profit share deal, royalties are paid until the book's sales have covered the cost of production. However, after this point, the profits are then split 50/50 between the publisher and author.

What is the duration of a publishing agreement? The typical book publishing agreement recites its duration as the full term of copyright and applicable extensions and renewals if any. Under current US law, the full term of copyright is the life of the author (or surviving joint author) plus 70 years.
