Despite many applicants lying on their resume and the perceived insignificance of a minor lie such as changing employment dates, you should still avoid it at all costs. In general, this can have a waterfall effect that trickles into other aspects of your life.
Skip the periods. Remember: Bullet points are often fragments rather than complete sentences. But if you choose to use a period for one phrase, use one for every bullet to maintain consistency and make your resume look more uniform and professional.
If you fudged employment dates on your resume by more than a couple of weeks or if youre worried at all about being caught you can: Update your resume and resend it. This is usually the best option; you can simply say that you caught a small mistake on your resume and wanted to send a corrected version.
My advice: avoid the semicolon, even if you know how to use it. Periods: Believe it or not, the simple period often gets misused on resumes. Of course, periods are good to put at the end of complete sentences. But many resumes include lines that are not sentences and that end in periods.
Youll want to use basic grammar rules when writing a bullet point list. If the bullet point contains a sentence, you should add a period to the end of it like how you would with any other sentence you write.
There is some debate on whether or not bullet points should end in a period. However, the general consensus recommends including a period if youve phrased all your achievements as complete sentences. If not, its okay to opt out of the dot.
Periods: If you use periods at the end of one sentence, use a period at the end of every sentence. Pro Tip: I highly recommend the use of periods as it also denotes a more complete statement. Avoid forcing an HR manager to wade through a bulleted list of incomplete details.
Should You Put Periods after Bullet Points on a Resume. Its a contentious point, but the generally agreed rule is that you have to include a period if youve written your resume bullet points as complete sentences. If theyre fragments however you can leave it out.
