If the font looks different in your PDF to the original Word doc it may be because the font cant be embedded. In this case, the PDF reader may substitute it for a different font. If you wish to retain the original font then you can use a bitmap image of the text instead.
The reason why it changes the format/font when a Word document is converted to PDF is that Word is not designed to create a PDF files.
