this video is going to look at the relationship between the number of bits and the number of patterns that are possible for the number of bits given the simplest storage element is often referred to as a flip-flop it is useful to think of a flip-flop as a schematic diagram as shown here simply a box or an area into which you can store a bit so when we consider a flip-flop we can say a flip-flop can start a bit and this bit can be a zero or it can be a one lets consider a pattern of bits bits can be grouped together to produce many different patterns lets consider a flip-flop and lets add to it another flip-flop and now we can consider what bits can be placed in each of the flip-flops and how many patterns can be produced well lets consider them both flip-flops can store a zero as you can see another combination we can have is shown here another one and finally the last possible combination when you have two bits lets now consider three flip-flops joined together and how many diff

Number of possible patterns of N bits = 2N This is an essential fact. If you allow yourself to get muddled on it, you will waste much time in this and future courses. This number occurs often in computer science. 1024 bytes is called a kilobyte, abbreviated K and pronounced "Kay".
So again, we see that 255 in binary is written as 11111111.
Six bits can only encode 64 distinct characters, so these codes generally include only the upper-case letters, the numerals, some punctuation characters, and sometimes control characters.
It is similar with the binary number system because it also uses (exponent) numbers to get a specific number. "The binary pattern 01000001 represents the number 65."
So again, we see that 255 in binary is written as 11111111.
Using these two states in a group of five-bits to represent each character gives a total of 32 unique combinations. You can create a list of these 32 five-bit combinations by starting with the '00000' combination first and then counting in binary until you reach the combination '11111'.
With 4 bits, it is possible to create 16 different values. All single-digit hexadecimal numbers can be written with four bits. Binary-coded decimal is a digital encoding method for numbers using decimal notation, with each decimal digit represented by four bits.
The binary code assigns a pattern of binary digits, also known as bits, to each character, instruction, etc. For example, a binary string of eight bits (which is also called a byte) can represent any of 256 possible values and can, therefore, represent a wide variety of different items.
In computer applications, where binary numbers are represented by only two symbols or digits, i.e. 0 (zero) and 1(one). The binary numbers here are expressed in the base-2 numeral system. For example, (101)2 is a binary number. Each digit in this system is said to be a bit.
The capital letter A is represented by the number 65 in the ASCII code (65 is 01000001 in binary).
