Record the correct information and other information like you did in the original return. Prepare a new Form 1096 as well with corrected information. Mail the corrected Form 1099-NEC and 1096 to the IRS and any required state tax departments. Mail or hand in the corrected Form 1099-NEC to your independent contractor.
To correct Type 1 errors, file the correct form with the correct amount, code, checkbox, name or address and check the CORRECTED box (generally located at the top of the form). Submit the corrected 1099 form to the recipient and prepare the red Copy A to send to the IRS with the Form 1096 transmittal if paper filing.
