So Ive been getting a lot of questions recently about how to better control page numbering in a Pages document. Sometimes you want to skip pages or have a cover page. So lets take a look at how to get exactly the page numbers that you want. Pages has, of course, two modes. Word Processing and Page Layout. Lets start by looking at Word Processing. Im going to create a blank document and Im going to paste in some text here to fill out the document. So as you can see Ive got a bunch of pages here. Lets go back to the top and add page numbering. If you want numbering to start with 1 on the second page, go to Page Number Format Page Numbers, and set Start at to 0.
Use the Page field code to insert page numbers To change the numbering format, go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers. Select the format you want, and then select OK. To change the numbering alignment, go to Header Footer Page Number Page Number. Choose the alignment you want and select OK.
Insert page numbers Select Insert Page Number, and then choose the location and style you want. If you dont want a page number to appear on the first page, select Different First Page. If you want numbering to start with 1 on the second page, go to Page Number Format Page Numbers, and set Start at to 0.
To simply skip numbering on the first page, click the Insert tab in the ribbon menu, then click Header and Edit Header. In the Header Footer Tools menu that appears, click the Design tab and check the box next to Different First Page.
