A reverse outline is just what it sounds like: outlining in reverse. In the early stages of the writing process (before you have a draft), it is a good idea to outline your ideas and produce a draft from that outline. Reverse outlining is producing an outline from the draft you have already written.
Reverse outlining is simply making an outline AFTER an essay has been written. For every paragraph, write the main idea or main argument in a small number of words in the margin next to that paragraph. This process allows you to see the structure or progress of an essay in a quick and clear way.
Reverse outlining follows a two-step, repeatable process: In the left-hand margin, write down the topic of each paragraph. Try to use as few words as possible. In the right-hand margin, write down how the paragraph topic advances the overall argument of the text. Again, be brief.
There is no strict APA format for outlines, so just make sure the outline is: Times New Roman font. 12 pt size. double spaced. one inch margins on all four sides.
Reverse outlining is exactly what it sounds like: a process whereby you take away the supporting writing and are left with a papers main points or main ideas, sometimes represented by the papers topic sentences.
How to create a reverse outline. Start with a complete draft to have a fuller picture of the plan you carried out. You can use a partial draft to review the organization of the paragraphs you have written so far. Construct the outline by listing the main idea of each paragraph in your draft in a blank document.
A reverse outline should go paragraph by paragraph. Read one paragraph at a time and write the main idea of each paragraph in the margins of your paper (remember that for your first paragraph, the main point should be your thesis statement!!!) Then list these points, paragraph by paragraph, on another piece of paper.
Reverse outlining follows a two-step, repeatable process: In the left-hand margin, write down the topic of each paragraph. Try to use as few words as possible. In the right-hand margin, write down how the paragraph topic advances the overall argument of the text. Again, be brief.
The standard outline format uses an alphanumeric system, which alternates letters and numerals at the start of each section. Main topics like sections or chapters are listed as Roman numerals. Paragraphs are usually listed as capital letters. Points and subtopics within a paragraph are listed as Arabic numerals.
