You are not required to update Form I-9 when your employee has a legal change of name. However, it is recommended that you maintain correct information on Forms I-9 and note any name changes in Section 3.
Typically, these ID numbers are assigned by HR and never change for a given employee, even if they change roles. Employee numbering systems must generate a unique number, so there is no confusion whatsoever between team members.
