You can create an AMI using the AWS Management Console or the command line. The following diagram summarizes the process for creating an AMI from a running EC2 instance. Start with an existing AMI, launch an instance, customize it, create a new AMI from it, and finally launch an instance of your new AMI.
You cannot update the AMI on your current instance. You should create a new instance with the CentOS AMI.
You can copy an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) within or across AWS Regions. You can copy both Amazon EBS-backed AMIs and instance-store-backed AMIs. You can copy AMIs with encrypted snapshots and also change encryption status during the copy process. You can copy AMIs that are shared with you.
It's not possible to transfer existing instances or AMIs between AWS accounts. Instead, you can manually migrate an EC2 image from one AWS account to another.
In the EC2 console, choose Systems Manager, Automations. Choose Run automation document. ... For the SourceAmiId variable, enter the ID of the Windows AMI to update. ... Optionally, specify values for the following (descriptions for each variable are listed in the console):
There is no cost to make an AMI itself, but if you're making it from a running instance you will pay the fees for running a micro instance (which is about $0.02/hr, depending on availability region - see the pricing details) and also fees for using the EBS root for however long you use it.
Update AMI Navigate to AWS Console –> Services –> EC2 –> Auto Scaling –> Launch Configurations. Select a LC –> Copy launch configuration. Click Edit AMI. Click Create launch configuration.
To edit an instance's configuration Stop the instance, if it is not already stopped. On the Instances page, click an instance name to display the Details page. Click Edit to display the edit page. Edit the instance's configuration, as appropriate.
Update AMI Navigate to AWS Console –> Services –> EC2 –> Auto Scaling –> Launch Configurations. Select a LC –> Copy launch configuration. Click Edit AMI. Click Create launch configuration.
Log in to the AWS Management Console, display the EC2 page for your region, then click Instances. Choose the instance from which you want to create a custom AMI. Click Actions and click Create Image.
