Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
If bleeding after a Pap smear is from normal causes, such as a cervical scratch, the bleeding should stop within a few hours. Spotting may last up to two days, but the bleeding will become lighter. Avoid sex and don't use a tampon in the two to three days following a Pap smear if you're experiencing bleeding.
In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis. A bacterial or yeast infection. Inflammation in the pelvic area. Normal cellular changes that occur with age.
If you're experiencing light spotting, testing accuracy should be less of a concern. Second is your comfort level with being seen while on your period. Your pap smear can always be rescheduled, so there's no need to put yourself in an uncomfortable position by rushing to get it done while menstruating.
About 5% of all Pap tests will be abnormal, meaning that the sample contains atypical cervical cells. However, the majority of these cells are not cancerous or even precancerous. An abnormal Pap test result does not mean cancer, but it does require follow-up to rule out the possibility of cancer.

Minor changes in the size, shape and number of cervical cells are called CIN-1 or mild dysplasia. Nearly all of the low-grade abnormalities (CIN-1) will go away without treatment, as they are due to an HPV infection. Treatment is no longer recommended for this abnormality as the harm outweighs the benefits.
Abnormal Pap test results: An abnormal test result may also be called a positive test result. Some of the cells of the cervix look different from the normal cells. An abnormal test result does not mean you have cancer. Your health care provider will recommend monitoring, more testing, or treatment.
There's no need to panic When you hear that your Pap smear results were abnormal, you might feel some anxiety. Although worry is a common and normal reaction, it's important to know that your test results merely showed that you have an infection or unusual cells known as dysplasia. None of this means you have cancer.
