Invoices and receipts have different purposes as theyre issued at different stages of the sales process. Invoices are issued prior to the customer sending the payment, whereas a receipt is issued after the payment has been received. The invoice acts as a request for payment, and the receipt acts as a proof of payment.
An invoice is not a receipt and the key difference between the two is that an invoice is issued before payment as a way of requesting compensation for goods or services, while receipts are issued after payment as proof of the transaction. An invoice tracks the sale of a businesss goods or services.
Enter a sales payment to reverse the original receipt.Open: Customers Amend Transactions Amend Allocation. Select the receipt and click Edit. Select the receipt, click Reverse, and choose Debit and Credit. Click Save.

You could do this manually, e.g. enter a credit note in the system to reverse an invoice. However, there is a reverse function within Sage that does exactly that (highlighted above). When you click this function, you will need to select the transaction you want and then click Reverse.
Open: Customers Amend Transactions Amend Allocation. Select the receipt and click Edit. Select the receipt, click Reverse, and choose Debit and Credit. Click Save.
In the Money in section, select Sales receipts or Invoice payments. Select the sales receipt or invoice payment that you want to edit. Select Edit ✎. Make changes, then select Save.
