A chart legend appears by default when you first create a chart. For most charts, legends show the names and colors of each series of data. The legend text is taken from the charts data range.
The legend tells us what each bar represents. Just like on a map, the legend helps the reader understand what they are looking at. Legend examples can be found in the second and third graphs above.
Add a chart legend Click the chart. Click Chart Elements. next to the table. Select the Legend check box. The chart now has a visible legend.
Click the chart, and then click the Chart Layout tab. To change the position of the legend, under Labels, click Legend, and then click the legend position that you want. To change the format of the legend, under Labels, click Legend, click Legend Options, and then make the format changes that you want.
Click the chart, and then click the Chart Design tab. Click Add Chart Element Legend. To change the position of the legend, choose Right, Top, Left, or Bottom. To change the format of the legend, click More Legend Options, and then make the format changes that you want.
If there is only one value category plotted in your chart, then there is no need to have a legend. The necessary information can be included in the title instead. Alternatively, you can label the axis directly.
4 Features of a Good Figure Legend: Title: A brief title that applies to the entire figure, including all panels. Materials and methods: A description of the techniques used. Results: A statement of the results that can be gleaned from the particular figure. Definitions: An explanation of features in the figure.
Select your chart in Excel, and click Design Select Data. Click on the legend name you want to change in the Select Data Source dialog box, and click Edit. Type a legend name into the Series name text box, and click OK.
Select a chart and then select the plus sign to the top right. Point to Legend and select the arrow next to it. Choose where you want the legend to appear in your chart.
If you want to adjust the line space between lines in the legend, you can right-click the legend to select Properties from the context menu to open the Text Object dialog. In the Text tab of this dialog, for the Line Spacing(%) item, select a value from the drop-down list or enter a value in the combo box directly.
