A change of address with the IRS must be submitted on paper, but it doesnt take long. You can print and fill out Form 8822 from the IRS website.
Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
If You Made a Mistake. If you made a mistake on your EIN application, such as if you listed a non-owner or officer in Item 3 or elsewhere, do not submit a new EIN application, Form SS-4. Instead, submit a letter to the IRS, preferably on your company letterhead.
Each business entity must have a distinctive EIN. In other words, business entities may not share an EIN. This rule applies whether starting multiple business entities at the same time or dividing an existing business into separate entities.
Use Form 8822-B to notify the Internal Revenue Service if you changed your business mailing address, your business location, or the identity of your responsible party.
The number of EINs you are allowed is as many as the number of business entities you have. A single business or entity can have only one, although there are situations where you will need to apply for a new one due to changes to your business.
Generally, businesses need a new EIN when their ownership or structure has changed. Although changing the name of your business does not require you to obtain a new EIN, you may wish to visit the Business name change page to find out what actions are required if you change the name of your business.
Can you transfer an EIN to a new owner? Typically, if there has been a change in business structure or ownership, you cant transfer an EIN to a new owner. So, you will need to obtain a new EIN.
