This video shows how to format the header for an APA style paper. So step one, double click in the header area, and then select Header and Footer in the ribbon at the top. Youll select Different First Page, up there we type running head: (colon). Then we want the first chunk of our title, kind of a short name for it. copy that and paste it up here. Now remember the running head should be all capitals, so well change the format to Uppercase. We also want a page number so we select insert page numbers on the right. Okay so page one is good. Now for subsequent pages we also need the running header in capitals, Format, Change Case, Uppercase, and the page number. Theres page one with our running head page 2, page 3, looking good.

Click into the white space to the left of Page 1 just above where it says “First Page Header.” Then type the words Running head with a colon as per APA format;then add the title of your paper IN CAPITALS after the colon.
Click on Page Setup on the toolbar. This will display the Page Layout Dialog Box. Check the box for "Different first page" and then click on OK to close that dialog. Now the header box will say "First Page Header" and anything you typed in the " Header" box before will be gone!
Click on “Insert” > “Header” (or double click at the top of a page). Select the “Blank” template (left-aligned without additional formatting). Insert your (abbreviated) paper title in capital letters.
Margins are a section property. That means you can't change the left and right margins for the header or footer without also changing them for the body of the document. To work around this behavior, use an indent and aligned tab in the header. You can do so manually or by modifying the Header or Footer style.
Select Layout > Breaks > Next Page. Double-click the header or footer on the first page of the new section. Click Link to Previous to turn it off and unlink the header or footer from the previous section. Note: Headers and footers are linked separately.
Double-click inside the header or footer area. Select the text you want to change and type your new header or footer in its place. Select Close Header and Footer or double-click anywhere outside of the header or footer area to exit.
In header/footer edit mode, hover your mouse pointer over the "bottom/Top margin of the Header / Footer until it turns into the 2 headed arrow. Then you can click and drag the margin up/down.
Use different headers or footers on odd or even pages Click a header or footer. At the right, click Options. Under "Apply to," click Whole document. Click Different odd and even. Apply.
Select the Header section of your document by going to the insert tab OR you can double click at the top of the page for header section to pop up. In the Header & Footer tools design tab, check the box next to “Different first page”. To insert a page number on your first page: go to the Header & Footer group.
Go to the Insert tab and click Header & Footer. On the right side of the document, click the Options drop-down arrow. Select how you'd like to set up the headers and footers. You can pick from Different First Page, Different Even & Odd Pages, or Different First, Even & Odd Pages.
