The death of Curley's wife From the beginning of the novella, Steinbeck foreshadows that Lennie will accidentally kill Curley's wife while trying to stroke her hair. In the first section, George scolds Lennie for petting mice until they die.
Steinbeck compares Lennie to a bear, a potentially very dangerous animal. Lennie drags his feet the way a bear drags his paws . The only way he can cope is to be a like a tame dog, tethered always to his master George and never let out of his master's sight.
Carlson shoots Candy's dog because it is old, sick, and no longer able to work as a sheep dog. Carlson says the dog “ain't no good” to Candy, unable to see that the dog still has value as Candy's friend and companion.
Lennie is also associated with rabbits, which are part of his dream (he will get to tend them on the farm) and because they are soft things he likes to pet. Rabbits also symbolize his realization that he is in trouble; if Lennie does "a bad thing," George will not let him tend the rabbits.
The most important is Candy's dog, a very old sheepdog that has outlived its usefulness. Although Candy loves his dog very much, Carlson takes the dog and shoots it. Candy's dog symbolizes the fate of the weak. Candy fears that he, too, will be killed when he is no longer strong.
During the conversation, Lennie tells Crooks about the dream of owning a farm. Crooks doesn't believe that it will ever happen. He starts to question the relationship between George and Lennie. During this conversation, Crooks asks Lennie what he would do if George got hurt.
Curley's wife shows many sides to herself in chapter 4, she starts off being very nice and friendly, to getting slightly annoyed at the men and finally to get very upset at how she is constantly ignored by the other ranch workers and her husband. ...read more.
Lennie kills it right before she walks in the barn. Steinbeck creates Lennie's adoration for rabbits and not wanting to get in trouble both to lead to the death of Curley's wife. This case of foreshadowing heightens the conflict and turning point of the novel.…
He also wants to protect himself from George's wrath when he accidentally kills Curley's wife. It foreshadows that when Lennie is afraid, his actions are that of self-preservation. “… And he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish” (91).
Carlson wanted to shoot Candy's dog because it was smelly, but mainly because it was old, toothless, and overall in a miserable physical state, and Carlson wanted to put it out of it's misery.
