The security clearance process takes an average of three to four months to complete but can take up to a full year to complete depending on your background.
To be eligible for a Top Secret clearance, you must: Be a Canadian citizen; Have 10 years of verifiable information; Demonstrate suitability and reliability throughout the assessment process; and, Not participate in illegal activities.

You were dishonorably discharged from the military. You are currently involved in illegal drug use. You have been judged as mentally incompetent or mentally incapacitated by a mental health professional. You have had a clearance revoked for security reasons.
You must provide your SIN to your employer no later than 3 days after your employment start date. This does not prevent you from working before receiving your SIN. If you don't already have a SIN, you must apply for one within 3 days after you start your employment.
Security assessments fall under one of two categories for resident Canadians: Government Screening, and Sensitive Sites Screening. A lower-level clearance may involve a background check into your education, job history, criminal record, credit history and residences.

Enquiries on the status of a security clearance application should be directed to the sponsoring department or agency's Departmental Security Officer (DSO). Under the Privacy Act, individuals have the right to access personal information about themselves held by government institutions.
There is no cost to obtain a clearance, but accredited fingerprinting companies will charge a fee (typically ~$50.00 plus HST) for taking your fingerprints and submitting them electronically.
