They did have flags.
Over the past 200 years, Egypt has had a total of seven flags on its masts, with a new flag for every phase of its history during the past two centuries, Sarah Ahmed Shawky writes for Stepfeed.
The nation's symbol on the flag has changed a few times since the Republic of Egypt was established, but the core design has remained stable. Egypt's national flag is made up of three equal horizontal red, white, and black stripes with the national emblem (the Eagle of Saladin) in the center of the white stripe.
The first known flag used officially in Egypt was a plain black flag of the Rashidun Caliphate, the largest empire in the world at that point. When the Umayyads took control in 661 the flag was changed to a plain white field.
Inspired by the ancient eagle depicted on Egyptians temples from the Pharaonic era, Saladin, the first Sultan of Egypt, took the animal as a symbol of strength, and carried a yellow flag emblazoned with an eagle as his personal standard.
The first Egyptian flag was released when Mohamed Ali seized power in Egypt in 1805. It has a red banner with three white crescents and three stars.
The Flag of the United Arab Republic 1958 - 1971 The Egyptian flag changed again after the union of Egypt and Syria in 1958. The new flag consisted of three colors: red, white, and black with two green stars in the middle representing Egypt and Syria.
When Egypt was under Ottoman occupation in 1517 AD, the official flag of Egypt became the Ottoman red Turkish flag with a white crescent and the hexagonal star.
In 1922, the UK agreed to formally recognize Egyptian independence, but only on the condition that the Sultan of Egypt, Fuad I, change his title to King. Upon so doing, the now King Fuad issued a Royal Decree formally adopting a new national flag of a white crescent with three white stars on a green background in it.
Whilst the Federation of Arab Republics was dissolved in 1977, Egypt retained the Federation's flag until October 4, 1984, when the black Hawk of Qureish was replaced in the white band (and on the coat of arms) by the Eagle of Saladin (the 1958 version as opposed to the 1952 version).
