Do not use nicknames. A letter of recommendation has more traction when it is clear that you genuinely know the student.
The letter should be about one page in length and generally consist of three parts: opening, body, and closing. The writer should explain the relationship between himself/herself and the candidate as well as why the letter is being written.
Some writers include the target employers or review committees address at the top left margin beneath the letterhead and date; others simply begin with a greeting directed to the name of the individual heading the group that will review your letter. Get the student to give you an actual name if possible.
Many counselors recommend beginning with a statement of how you know the student (did you teach them in a subject, coach them in a sport or supervise them in an internship?) and for how long youve known them. Use the students full name in the first mention, then just the first name.
If you are writing a personal letter of reference, include a salutation (Dear Dr. Smith, Dear Mr. Jones, etc.). If you are writing a general reference letter, say To Whom it May Concern or simply dont include a salutation.
Letter of recommendation format A personal story that elaborates on one to two traits the applicant possesses. A closing statement that summarizes why the individual youre recommending would be a good fit for the opportunity. A signature that includes your name and contact information.
If you need to make changes to a submitted recommendation, you can do so only if the applicant has not submitted their final application to their school. If the applicant has submitted their final application, the school has already received the recommendation and changes cannot be made.
4 Answers. Not all professors customize their letters to the specific recipient. It probably helps a little (especially if the recipient is at a prestigious institution, so that they know that this letter isnt directed at a generic less-prestigious institution), but its not that necessary. But you definitely should.
