The Preferred Name Rule is a strategy and set of procedures to allow students, faculty, and staff to represent their first name as they see fit. Ones preferred name will essentially be used in lieu of a individuals legal first name on unofficial documents.
Chosen Name means the name by which an individual wishes to be addressed by the university community that is different from an individuals legal name. B. Legal Name is the name that appears on an individuals passport, drivers license, birth certificate, or U.S. Social Security Card.
A chosen first name is a name that you choose to be called. It is different from your name assigned to you at birth.
A preferred/chosen name is any name a student chooses to use other than their legal name. For example, a student may wish to shorten their first name (e.g. Steven to Steve) or to be referred to by their middle name or a nickname.
If your name has changed and the name that appears on your educational credentials is different from your current name, you must submit an official document (marriage certificate or other document) that proves your legal change of name.
Chosen Name: A chosen name is simply a name that a person uses in their daily life that is different than the name appearing on their legal records.
A chosen or preferred name is the use of a first, middle and/or last name that is different from a persons legal name. There are many reasons why someone would use a chosen name, such as a reflection of gender identity, as a nickname, or as a westernized or Americanized name.
Example: Thomas Smith is known by the first name Tom. Thomas is his legal first name. Tom is his preferred name.
