While changing your name can be a hassle that comes with lots of documentation and forms, you dont have to worry about it affecting your credit score. Thats because multiple pieces of information are used to identify you for credit purposes, including your Social Security number (SSN).
Update your name with your creditors Typically, youll need to fill out some paperwork, provide a photo ID and submit evidence of your legal name change. After a creditor changes your name, it can be updated in your credit reports the next time the company submits your account information to the credit bureaus.
Its a little easier when youre only changing your last name: after you update your name with your creditors, theyll update the credit bureaus, and the reports will reflect your new name automatically.
Reporting a name change to the credit bureaus may seem like a logical step, since your credit history plays an important role in your ability to get a loan or credit card. But you shouldnt need to contact the credit-reporting agencies to have your name updated.
For a name change, Experian requires you to provide a copy of the court order reflecting the name change, a government-issued form of identification with your old or new name and a dated copy of a utility, bank or insurance statement.
When you change your name you are simply adding that new information to your existing credit file. All of your financial history stays the same. And on the other hand, changing your name wont improve your credit score either.
Firstly, you will remain responsible and liable for any existing debts and creditors are likely to pursue you through all means possible in order to recover them. Simply changing your name is not a viable solution and as a tactic its likely to make things even worse.
In conclusion. Whatever your reason is for changing your name, know that your credit score will not be affected by this change alone.
