Most state government websites have name change application forms available online. In legal terms, this form may consist of a petition and an Order To Show Cause to legally change your name. You should be able to submit a name change application form on a web page online.
Still, every state except Hawaii will provide you with a Court Order that can be used to make changes with your ID and Official Records. Because of Full Service, by EZ Name Change, California, Georgia and Illinois are considered among the easiest and surest ways to get a name legally changed.
In most states, you will likely have to attend a brief court hearing at a court date where the judge may ask a few questions about why you are changing your name. The entire process from filing to completion may take a few weeks to a few months, depending on how busy the courts are.
Change your preferred name To see your current name or to change your preferred first or middle name, log in to One. IU and go to Personal Information. Choose Biographical Info to modify your preferred name and select Save. Note that this will not update the name on your diploma or transcripts.
In most cases, you must file a petition with your local court to change your name. To do so, you may need to file paperwork and appear before a judge to complete the process. Find your local government website and contact your circuit court to get information about how you can legally change your name.
To adopt a nickname, you dont need to take any official steps or notify people. However, if as an adult, you want to be officially known by another name, or change your name, you need to complete a deed poll or a statutory declaration of change of name and then notify everyone of the change.
Although you do not need a lawyer to obtain a court-ordered name change, it can still cost in the range of $150 $500 for various court and filing fees. Required documentation varies by state, and fees vary by county. There is no single fee that applies in every state across the country.
