In a forbearance agreement, the loan owner (lender) agrees to reduce or suspend your payments for a set time. With a repayment plan, the lender temporarily increases your monthly payment by adding part of the overdue amount to your current payments so that you can get caught up on the loan.
A loan modification may alter the maturity date of a loan, as a loan modification can amend any provision of the original loan contract. In a forbearance agreement, there would be no formal change to the maturity date because the loan stays in default status during the forbearance period.
Forbearance is the intentional action of abstaining from doing something. In the context of the law, it refers to the act of delaying from enforcing a right, obligation, or debt.
