CAN A DOCTOR CHARGE ME FOR MY MEDICAL RECORDS? The doctor may charge you to copy your records. The cost may not be greater than $1.00 per page or $100.00 for the entire record, whichever is less.
An office may charge a flat fee for patients who are requesting a copy of their medical records. However, this fee cannot exceed $6.50, including postage, labor, and supplies. It is just as important for physicians and staff to know when they cannot charge a patient for a copy of their medical records.
The HIPAA Privacy Rule permits a covered entity to charge a reasonable, cost-based fee for individuals (or their personal representatives) to receive (or direct to a third party) a copy of the individuals PHI.
