The Ford government previously eliminated all fees associated with the annual registration of licence plates in 2022. As of March 13, 2022, drivers of passenger vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds and light commercial vehicles were no longer required to pay to renew their licence plates or put a sticker on them.
For replacement, both plates must be taken to a ServiceOntario centre in addition to: identification (e.g. drivers licence) proof of valid insurance.
You can replace lost, damaged or stolen vehicle ownership papers at any Service Ontario branch office. Be sure to bring identification, your drivers license, your VIN and proof of insurance with you. A fee of $32 will be charged for their production.
Vehicle registration fees include $32 for the vehicle permit in Ontario, or $59 for a new or replacement licence plate plus the permit. When you register, you will also pay retail sales tax for your vehicle, and you will also be required to pay for any outstanding fines under your name.
Vehicle permits and licence plates are issued immediately. Personalized licence plates will be mailed to the address you provide.
If you cant go to a registry office, another person can apply for a vehicle registration, renewal, cancellation or transfer on your behalf. The person requesting the service on your behalf must bring: your proof of ownership document, proof of valid insurance, and their ID.
It will cost $32 to transfer car ownership in Ontario. This is applicable to all types of vehicles. This fee is often lumped into the total buying cost and will be listed on the car bill of sale.
