We all know how to calculate a percentual price increase or decrease This is what we learned in school. Say, we have a stock worth 100 yesterday and today the stock price goes to 110 then the price increase is 10 We divide this increase of ten by yesterdays value and we get ten over one hundred equals ten percent. Easy enough. However, in finance this approach poses a problem The issue is that there is no symmetry between an increase and decrease of a similar amount. An example is helpful here Lets go back to our stock. Yesterdays price was 100, todays price is 110. The increase is 10 which equals ten percent. Now the stock drops in value again with ten You would expect the decrease to be ten percent again. This is wrong. As it turns out the decrease is just 9.09% This is the problem: a price rise of ten followed by a drop of ten does not produce a percentual increase of ten percent followed by a percentual decrease of ten. There is no symmetry We can tackle this problem by us

Logarithmic Price Changes Take the natural log of the quotient of the period 2 price divided by the period 1 price. Reusing the previous example: the logarithmic price change would be ln (604/620)=-0.0261 or -2.61%. As we can see, both methods calculate roughly the same value for percentage change in price.

(Return to top of page.) First difference of LOG = percentage change: When used in conjunction with differencing, logging converts absolute differences into relative (i.e., percentage) differences. Thus, the series DIFF(LOG(Y)) represents the percentage change in Y from period to period.
Log-Log. This equation tells us that for a fixed percentage changed in our independent variable (x), our dependent variable (Y) would change by x percentage change to the power of 0.03. If x changes by 10%, y would change by 0.3% (1.1⁰⁰ = 1.003). If x changes by 20%, y would change by 0.5% (1.2⁰⁰ = 1.005).
Calculating percentage increase work out the difference between the two numbers being compared. divide the increase by the original number and multiply the answer by 100. in summary: percentage increase = increase original number 100.
Two kinds of logarithms are often used in chemistry: common (or Briggian) logarithms and natural (or Napierian) logarithms. The power to which a base of 10 must be raised to obtain a number is called the common logarithm (log) of the number. The power to which the base e (e = 2.718281828.)
The percentage difference between two values is calculated by dividing the absolute value of the difference between two numbers by the average of those two numbers. Multiplying the result by 100 will yield the solution in percent, rather than decimal form.
Taking log brings the values on to a comparable scale and brings in linearity to the values. Compare the right-hand graph which is on the Logarithmic scale with the left-hand graph which has original Income values on Y-axis. The right graph tends to be more linear. Logarithms help us to handle non-linear data.
How do you calculate percentage change? ((after value before value) / before value) * 100 = % change. Simply subtract the before value from the after value; then divide by the before value. Multiply the result by 100.
