Hey guys, in this video were going to talk about a couple of different email protocols and these are POP3 and IMAP. Now these protocols are used for retrieving email from an email server. So for example if youre using an email client such as Microsoft outlook, you would configure outlook with either POP3 or IMAP to retrieve your email on a computer. And you can also use these protocols on your tablet or smartphone to retrieve your email. So you can use either one, the choice is yours. But the question is, which protocol do you want to use? Is one better than the other? So thats what were going to talk about. So lets talk about POP3 first. Now POP3 stands for post office protocol 3. Now POP3 is the simplest of the two protocols because the only thing that POP3 does is download the email to your device from a mail server. And it only downloads whats in your inbox folder, which is where your email is, and thats pretty much it. It doesnt download any

POP3 vs IMAP POP3 downloads emails from a server to a single computer, making those emails only accessible on that specific computer. IMAP stores emails on a server and then syncs them across multiple devices. IMAP is more advanced than POP3 and allows you to access your email from anywhere, and on any device.
Outlook.com (Microsoft) provides IMAP access to your Outlook.com (Microsoft) account, so you can connect to your email from mobile devices and desktop email clients.
Switching an IMAP account to POP3 would allow you to alleviate the server from managing your emails, and instead they would be stored locally on your computer. You would just need to create a new POP3 account in your mail client, then drag any messages off the server from the IMAP account you wish to download.
Post Office Protocol 3, or POP3, is the most commonly used protocol for receiving email over the internet. This standard protocol, which most email servers and their clients support, is used to receive emails from a remote server and send to a local client.
Gmail, Googles internet-based email service, runs on the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) system. It also offers Post Office Protocol (POP) mail server access. Both IMAP and POP mail servers both handle email messages, but in slightly different ways. Its up to the user to determine which suits them best.
Switching from a POP3 connection to an IMAP account could delete your existing emails. To avoid losing anything important, you should create a backup of your mailboxes.
IMAP is better if you are going to be accessing your email from multiple devices, such as a work computer and a smart phone. POP3 works better if you are only using one device, but have a very large number of emails. It is also better if you have a poor internet connection and need to access your emails offline.
The common protocols for email delivery are Post Office Protocol (POP), Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). Each of these protocols has a standard methodology to deal with the emails and also has defined functions.
