The term via (or via hole) means an electrical connection between different layers of a printed circuit board. Via is basically a small hole made through the PCB laminates that crosses two or more adjacent layers.
In the constraint manager, you can assign electrical, physical, and spacing constraints. Assign constraints by creating CSets or assigning values to each individual net. In the constraint manager window, select the Physical Constraint Set > All Layers.
To define a new Via Type, switch to the Via Types tab of the Layer Stack Manager. Here you define the Z-plane layer-spanning requirements of each of the via types that are needed for your design. When you open the Via Types tab it will include a single, thruhole via type.
To change the User Choice via size while routing: Shift+V - press this shortcut during interactive routing to pop up the Choose Via Size dialog. The dialog will automatically list all via sizes currently used in the design, select a via size and click OK to make that the User Choice via size.
Select the clickable Component link to open the Component mode of the Properties panel for the parent component. Net – use to choose a net for the via. All nets for the active board design will be listed in the drop-down list. Select No Net to specify that the via is not connected to any net.
To define a new Via Type, switch to the Via Types tab of the Layer Stack Manager. Here you define the Z-plane layer-spanning requirements of each of the via types that are needed for your design. When you open the Via Types tab it will include a single, thruhole via type.
A via that spans and connects from the top layer (red) to the bottom layer (blue), and also connects to one internal power plane (green).
The typical layout shows a via capture pad size of 0.660 mm, a via size of 0.254 mm, and an inner space and trace of 0.102 mm. With this layout, only one trace can be routed between the vias.
Via is used as an interconnection between copper layers on a PCB while the PTH is generally made larger than vias and is used as a plated hole for acceptance of component leads - such as non-SMT resistors, capacitors, and DIP package IC. PTH can also be used as holes for mechanical connection while vias may not.
Constraint Usage for Via Management in a PCB Design One of the best applications for managing vias and other intelligent design data in a PCB layout is a design constraint management system.
