okay so over the past week in a bit weve been talking about different Excel date functions now were going to kind of combine our knowledge into a problem that a client of mine had where we essentially imported a bunch of data theres a whole ton of rows here and the date got imported from another program with a dot in between lets say the month the day and the year and what we want is we actually want to convert this to a date format because I want to be able to sort it properly I might want to be able to format the day these types of things so we talked about a function called date value and in some cases it would be as simple as saying date value of that cell and away we go problem is Excel does not recognize this as a date or as an acceptable date format thats just in text so we cant use date value date value just isnt going to work for this what I need to do is I need to use that function we talked about earlier as well called date and the date function I give it the three p

Copy the dates that are in the cells that you want to convert. Copy the text and paste it into Notepad. Return to Excel and pick the cells into which you wish to paste the dates. Go to Home Number and pick the Text format with the cells chosen (from the drop down).
Select all the cells that contain dates that you want to convert to text. Go to Data Data Tools Text to Column. This would instantly convert the dates into text format.
First, pick the cells that contain dates, then right-click and select Format Cells. Select Custom in the Number Tab, then type dd-mmm-yyyy in the Type text box, then click okay. It will format the dates you specify.
Select the cell or cells with serial numbers that you want to convert to dates. Locate the Home tab in the top right of the Excel window and click on it. Find the Number Format box in the toolbar that will usually say General or Text. Click the down arrow next to the box and select Date from the menu.
If you want to quickly set date format in Excel to dd-mmm-yy, press Ctrl+Shift+#. Just keep in mind that this shortcut always applies the dd-mmm-yy format, like 01-Jan-15, regardless of your Windows Region settings.
Select the cells you want to format. Press CTRL+1. In the Format Cells box, click the Number tab. In the Category list, click Date, and then choose a date format you want in Type.
Quick conversion of text dates using Paste Special Copy any empty cell (select it and press Ctrl + C). Select the range with text values you want to convert to dates. Right-click the selection, click Paste Special, and select Add in the Paste Special dialog box: Click OK to complete the conversion and close the dialog.
Select all of the dates you want to convert and press Ctrl+C to copy them. Open Notepad or any other text editor, and paste the copied dates there. Notepad automatically converts the dates to the text format. Press Ctrl+A to select all text strings, and then Ctrl+C to copy them.
