This summer, children in the Rio Grande Valley participated in a chess camp at UTRGV, where they learned from top chess players. Two attendees, Savvy Fei Yan and Ivan Lopez, had the opportunity to learn from Grand Master Alex Mistah, who oversees the UTRGV chess program. The camp attracted 18 students who engaged in fun activities, including tournaments and solving puzzles, with assistance from fellow Grand Master Vladimir Bellows. Mistah noted that many current UTRGV chess team members began their journey at similar camps, highlighting how such experiences help young players improve their skills in chess and foster a stronger community among aspiring players.
